#  How to take a leave of absence 

 



## It’s common to consider taking a leave of absence at Harvard College. 



 

[Harvard College's leave of absence policy](https://handbook.college.harvard.edu/) gives you flexibility in your academic path. A leave of absence allows you to take an indefinite pause from studies to pursue other opportunities or priorities before returning to complete your degree. On average, 235 students a year take a leave of absence.

This guide explains the leave of absence policy and helps you understand its benefits, guides you to consider multiple viewpoints in making your decisions, provides information during time away, and supports returning to the College.

- Engaging with a career experience
- Addressing personal matter
- Focusing on a medical condition
- Spending time focusing on a commitment without also having to be enrolled in coursework
